Shoes have featured prominently in the popular female narrative, be they Cinderella's glass slippers (clearly a symbol of virginity) or the stilettos worn by the metropolitan predators of "Sex and the City" - women who share two great weaknesses: men and shoes.
Shoes are an integral part of their personalities. "Sometimes, when we're about to shoot a closeup, the director will say to me that I can take off my shoes as my feet won't be in the frame," said actress Sarah Jessica Parker. "But I've never done it. The expression of a woman in flats is totally different from one in heels."

EIGHT RULES FOR HAPPY FEET

1. Audrey Hepburn advised buying a pair of shoes half a size bigger, as comfort is integral to elegance.

2. As you get older, feet tend to get longer and wider. It's useless trying to squeeze into your usual size 6 1/2. Probably after the age of 40 you'll be a 7 1/2.

3. For the same reason, it's good to buy shoes in the evening, when feet are at their biggest, and never in the morning.

4. Try not to wear the same shoes too many days in a row. Ideally, you should change them every day to keep them from losing shape too soon.

5. Whenever you get the chance - at home or on the beach - walk around barefoot.

6. After an evening of walking on high heels, massage the soles of your feet with a tennis ball.

7. Look at the feet of your mother and grandmother. Many small deformations are hereditary but preventable.

8. Whatever kind of shoes you wear and whatever the shape of your feet, accept and love them, pampering them with great care and pedicures. Your feet are the pedestal that supports your soul.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SHOES

*
Always brush your shoes before wearing. Consider this as indispensable as combing your hair before going out.
*
Protect shoes from rain with a water-repellent spray. After a downpour, let them dry out in shoe forms and then give them another spray.
*
If a pair of shoes wears out after you've only worn them a few times, take them back to the shop and demand a repair or a substitution. This is your right, especially if you paid a lot for them.
*
If boots turn out to be unexpectedly tight in the calves, ask a shoe-repair person to stretch the material.
*
Don't put sneakers in a washing machine. Experts say you should wash them with a soft brush and a mixture of water and liquid soap or mild detergent. Marks on the leather trimming can be removed with cotton wool dipped in milk or, in extreme cases, correction fluid.

- Oprah Winfrey

"I can be in the dumps of dumpsters and go buy a new pair of shoes, and then it's okay. Even if it's just for the time being, for that moment it's what I need."
