Ivory Coast presidential election event:Forces stormed the bunker where Ivory Coast's strongman Laurent Gbagbo hung on to power Monday, arresting the man whose refusal to hand over the presidency to the election winner left hundreds dead and threatened to re-ignite a civil war in the world's largest cocoa producer.
Gbagbo's dramatic arrest came after days of heavy fighting during which French and U.N. helicopters fired rockets at his presidential residence. Miss Angola Leila wins Miss world:The annual Miss Universe pageant was held in Sao Paulo on Sunday night, and Miss Angola, 25-year-old Leila Lopes, took the crown after impressing judges with her striking cream-colored gown and insightful answer to the final question. Lopes is the first winner the pageant has ever selected from her country. After she beat 88 other competitors from around the world, she was crowned by last year’s winner, Ximena Navarrete, from Mexico.

Its a New Year"

South Africa carnivals: It's summer in Cape Town and the New Year is celebrated in great raucous style in the form of a carnival. The parades are huge flamboyant affairs with grand costumes, wonderful marching bands, singing, dancing and more. Needless to say, few Capetonians make it to work on the 2nd of January. This year is no different. On January 1, 2011, Cape Town city streets came alive with song and dance as the Cape Minstrel Carnival kicked off the new year. The celebration has its origins in the one day slaves were given off every year.
Mali desert festivals: The festival took place from January 14 through 18.The festival seeks its origin in the big traditional Touareg festivities, as Takoubelt in Kidal and Temakannit in Timbuktu, which represented for a long time a place for decision making and exchange of information among the different communities. At the beginning, there were songs and touareg dances, poetries, camel rides and games.

Cavadee
Cavadee is a colorful religious festival celebrated by the Tamil Hindu population in Mauritius. Devotees fast for ten days before the festival and then carry large replicas of temples and deities to the rivers to be cleansed and blessed by priests. An eye catching feature of the celebration is the piercings that many devotees undergo to show their devotion to the son of Shiva.
